Tracking ATL, reflection and IB projects

The parts of an IB education that are not a grade: skills, reflection, and the projects that carry them. Hard to see, which is why they need to be recorded deliberately.

For MYP and DP teachers, supervisors and coordinators · reviewed 23 August 2026

The 1 points where someone must decide

Pick the specific skill. Social skills cannot be observed.

/teacher/atl

One or two ATL skills per unit, taught explicitly. A planner naming six is usually describing skills students will happen to use rather than skills anybody intends to teach.

Pick the specific skill, not the category. Social skills cannot be observed; giving feedback that names a specific improvement can be.

/teacher/atl

A skill moves from introduced to demonstrated, each step carrying evidence from real classwork. Deciding what the evidence will be before the lesson is what makes it exist by the end of it.

Moving a skill forward requires evidence attached, not just a teacher's recollection. That is what makes growth over a year readable by somebody who was not in the room.

/teacher/growth

Reflection prompted at the end of a unit is worth more than reflection prompted at the end of a term. The student view and the teacher view are kept side by side, and the two disagreeing is itself useful information.

The PYP exhibition, MYP personal and community projects, service as action, and the DP core all run through milestones with a named supervisor.

The personal project in particular is where five years of ATL teaching becomes visible. A cohort struggling with the same part of it is telling you about years one to four, not about the project.

DP components carry drafts and supervisor feedback, and the risk view surfaces the ones falling behind while there is still time to act. A deadline that has passed is not a risk, it is a problem.

Who can approve what

Designations are assigned in IB roles and are separate from the account role somebody signs in with.

DesignationSeesApproves
TeacherTheir own studentsATL judgements and evidence
SupervisorTheir assigned studentsFeedback on their students' DP drafts
CoordinatorThe programmeThe same, across the programme

If something looks empty

ATL progress is blank across a year group

Skills are named in planners but not being evidenced. The move to demonstrated needs an artefact attached.

Reflections are thin

Usually a timing problem. Prompted at the end of a term, students no longer remember the work.

A supervisor cannot give feedback

They may not be assigned as that student's supervisor. That designation is what grants it.

Still stuck?

Bring the unit you are working on. Thirty minutes with someone who has taught the programme.
